Local and national retailers and restaurants view University City as a prime market due to an eclectic mix of employees, commuters, college students, and residents. Below, take a look at new restaurants, retail locations, and shops that have opened in our neighborhood over the past year, or are opening soon.

 

Amsale Café

Amsale Café, a 28-seat BYOB located in a converted hair salon in Walnut Hill, is the dream project for Gomege Achamyeleh to showcase the traditional Ethiopian dishes she’s perfected at home. Stop by for Achamyeleh’s takes on Ethiopian staples like injera, kitfo, and slow-stewed meats and vegetables.

 

Cleo’s Bagels 

Cleo’s, formerly known as Dodo’s, grew from an underground bagel service into a brick-and-mortar on Baltimore Avenue after serving 10,000 bagels in West Philadelphia since 2016. The shop features high-quality, freshly baked bagels, creative sandwiches, and more. 

 

Delco Steaks

Located within Franklin’s Table Food Hall, Delco Steaks serves up cheesesteaks, chicken cheesesteaks, burgers, fries, and more. Their Best of Philly winning cheesesteaks are made with rib-eye packed into seeded rolls from South Philadelphia’s Carangi Baking Company. 

 

Hangry Joe’s

Hangry Joe’s is a rapidly-growing Nashville-style chicken franchise with a simple premise: to offer customers the best chicken sandwich in town and an unforgettable experience to enjoy with friends and family. The menu features halal fried chicken sandwiches, bites, and tenders with six levels of heat ranging from no seasoning up to “angry hot,” which requires signing a waiver to enjoy. 

 

Indian Char House

ICH aims to revolutionize Indian cuisine with offerings of light dishes filled with grilled meats, fish, and vegetables prepared on a grill or in tandoor oven. They promise delicious, fresh meals perfect for sharing to create a sense of communal eating.

 

Kingsessing Ice Cream Shop

This family-owned and operated ice cream shop serves rotating flavors from local brands including Craved Kreations and Bassets. Try flavors ranging from standard, like mint chocolate chip or French vanilla, or go fancier with options like banana pudding, hopscotch (butterscotch with pecans), or BFF (French toast with Biscoff cookie crumbles and blueberry swirl).  

 

Madis Coffee Roasters

Madis Coffee Roasters specializes in understanding and mastering the coffee collection process. From tree to bean, they strive to create the perfect cup of coffee for each customer, and also offer a selection of specialty lattes, hot and iced teas, and breakfast and lunch sandwiches and salads. 

 

Milkcrate Cafe

Fishtown-based Milkcrate has opened a second location of their hip, vinyl boutique and café. Their two menus consist of new and vintage rock, soul, and jazz records plus used gear and La Colombe coffee to go with fast, simple, and creative breakfast, brunch, and lunch items.

 

Pod

Escape across the globe to Japan with a transformative meal at Pod, Stephen Starr's homage to traditional Japanese cooking techniques. Enjoy classic, mouthwatering dishes, modern options like Japanese Fried Chicken, sushi rolls and maki, plus sake and specialty drinks.
